The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is directed by one of Irregardless Cafe’s favorite jazz performers, Dr. Gregg Gelb. It is one of only 15 youth jazz ensembles from around the country to be chosen for this premier event.

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble was established in 2005 under the auspices of the non-profit Philharmonic Association. Awarded the Raleigh Medal of Arts in 2012 for extraordinary contribution to the arts, the Philharmonic Association sponsors twelve groups including five youth orchestras, three chamber and four jazz ensembles.

TYJE is open to advanced middle and high school musicians, selected by annual audition in August, its members develop the skills to perform a wide range of jazz compositions in a professional setting and are given a  variety of performance opportunities.

The 23 current jazz students come from ten different towns and nineteen different schools and many have no other opportunity to play in a jazz big band. They rehearse once a week for an hour and a half. TYJE has earned top honors seven years in a row since 2012 at The Carolina Jazz Festival, North Carolina Regional Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Festival at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In 2016 TYJE was the silver medalist in the national competition Jazz at Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington Festival. They are thrilled to be returning to the festival for a third time this coming May as the first and only group from North Carolina selected for this honor.

This is such a wonderful opportunity for great music, a lovely evening, and a chance to support our local arts and have a big sendoff for TYJE. TYJE leaves for NYC on May 9 and their performance at the competition is at 2pm on Friday, May 11 at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
