Come celebrate summer this month at The Well Fed Community Garden’s first-ever blackberry festival. “Enter the Garden” and experience this family friendly fun all about blackberries and growing food locally! There will be lots of activities for the whole family, yummy food from the garden, live music and more. The Garden’s Pizza oven will be baking all evening, with garden salad and Blackberry Cobbler too.

4 – 6 pm Hands-on activities on planting and cultivating vegetables and fruits, healthy soil maintenance, beekeeping, pollinator gardens, cooking demonstrations, soil health, nutrition and more.

5 – 8 pm Pizza, Live Music and fun

The Well Fed Community Garden is a unique example of urban agriculture at 1321 Athens Drive, across from the high school. In its fifth year of operation, it is managed by the Irregardless Cafe & Catering. Morgan Malone, Garden Manager, lives in the house with Garden Apprentices, and tills the land with her summer interns and lots of volunteers.

Pizzas fresh out of the oven

Shortly after the purchase of 1321 Athens Drive in the spring of 2012, the Irregardless’ owners surveyed the overgrown yard and were surprised to discover an old well, a remnant of this land’s earlier farming days. This well gives the garden it’s name, nourishing the land which in turn nourishes us with food.

This reclaimed farm produces at three seasons of crops are cultivate each year: Spring, Summer and Fall, as well as fruit trees, berries, shiitake mushrooms and chickens for eggs. The ‘season extension’ tunnels grow hydroponic and leaf lettuce during the Winter. About 80% of the food

grown is served at the Irregardless Cafe and its catering events and 20% is donated to community members.

You are invited to “Enter the Garden” and get involved. The Well Fed Community Garden offers weekly volunteer days on Thursday morning and Wine & Weeds on Thursday evenings. Monthly Volunteer day and Potluck on on the third Saturday of each month. Workshops on gardening are scheduled for each month as well as Farm Lunches and Dinner.

The Well Fed Community Garden is an example of urban agriculture – reconnecting city folks with how our food grows within the rhythms of nature.
